Description
The purpose of "Expressive Arts as a Doorway to the Divine" is to demonstrate that the transpersonal-expressive arts experience is a valid form of spiritual practice. The paper combines personal experience with research for the purpose of exploring the transpersonal-expressive arts phenomenon. The literature search for this paper includes the fields of transpersonal psychology, expressive art therapy, creativity, spirituality, and feminine psychology. Based upon a heuristic model which includes personal interviews, the research yielded various characteristics of the transpersonal-expressive arts phenomenon as well as conditions which seem to foster such experience. Guidelines are offered for those wishing to utilize the expressive arts as a tool for personal and spiritual growth. Environmental conditions which seem most conducive to the transpersonal-expressive arts experience are also outlined. These environmental conditions are consistent with person-centered principles for a helping relationship.
