Summary

Summary

To fill the needs of a growing Hispanic market, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of bilingual books being published. This bibliography lists more than 400 children's titles - mostly picture books, with alphabet and counting books also included - that feature text in both Spanish and English, with annotations and award and review information.

Reviews 3

School Library Journal Review

An updated version of the author's Bilingual Books in Spanish and English for Children (Libraries Unlimited, 1985; o.p.), this revision eliminates 45 nonrecommended titles and 2 outdated dictionaries and adds 226 new titles for a nearly doubled number of entries. The organization is the same. Listed alphabetically by author, basic bibliographic information is followed by a concise English annotation, and (where applicable) a list of reviews arranged alphabetically by journal title with the date of the review. The informative introduction, which outlines selection criteria and gives a brief history of bilingual publishing in the U.S., is printed in both Spanish and English. Two appendixes, one of publishers and one of cited review sources, are followed by three indexes: coauthors, illustrators, and translators; titles, series, and awards; and subject. An accessible, selective, longitudinal guide to books in both languages.-Ann Welton, Grant Elementary School, Tacoma, WA (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review

This book, in English and Spanish, grew out of a need for bilingual books for children in schools and libraries. More than 400 books with English and Spanish in them are annotated or listed with review sources given. Books with ISBN numbers are considered still in print. Annotations are largely descriptive but are critical when the compiler is aware of flaws. The introduction covers the publishing history of bilingual books in the U.S. from 1942 through December 31, 2001. It provides statistics on reviews, publishers, and awards. Translators, coauthors, and illustrators are included in the indexes. English-Spanish books are highly desirable for all children, not just those with Spanish as their first language. This unique book should be useful in selecting bilingual books for children in schools and libraries. -- RBB Copyright 2003 Booklist

Choice Review

Dale (formerly education, Southern Illinois Univ.) lists 433 children's titles that feature text in both Spanish and English. An update of her Bilingual Books in Spanish and English for Children (1985), this edition cites 226 new titles and has dropped 45 older works. Titles included are mostly picture, alphabet, and counting books, with some textbooks and dictionaries. Less than three percent of the books were published outside the US. Entries, alphabetically arranged, have annotations that summarize content, and they list awards books have received and reviews gathered from Children's Book Review Index. The alphabetically arranged entries are followed by appendixes showing number of books published by publisher and number of book reviews by journal and indexes for coauthors; titles, series, awards; and subjects (in both English and Spanish). Covering 1942-2001 (but only 15 of the titles were published in 2000 or 2001), this work is interesting for its historical view of bilingual publishing but not useful as a selection tool. ^BSumming Up: Recommended.
