Description
Narratives of seven individuals engaged in ranching in Sublette County, Wyoming were qualitatively analyzed to examine how these ranchers express human-to-nature relationships, what those relationships are, and the values that influence them. Four themes came from the narratives, most notably that the participants conceived human beings as intrinsically part of nature. The term "the land" is used to express this holistic worldview. Work, family, and connection to the land are important values of this way of life; time, work and experience on the ground are paramount for knowing the land. The language used to discuss these land relationships, the land ethics described, and important cultural values all hold significance for conservation efforts in Sublette County.
