Fremont County food and agriculture : a communal conversation

The research drew upon the principles of community based participatory research to conduct a community food assessment (CFA) in Fremont County, Wyoming. The CFA focused on: (1) The concerns residents have about food, and their perceptions of the county's food-related assets; (2) What is needed for a sustainable local food production including agriculture's assets and barriers. Consumer surveys, agriculture surveys, and photovoice were the research instruments. Fremont County agriculture appeared to be struggling due to high input costs and fluctuating market values of products. Producers participated in direct market sales primarily through informal market relationships, such as word of mouth. Consumers appeared to be concerned about the nutritional quality and freshness of food but primarily shopped for the lowest priced food. Also, consumers appeared to value locally grown and raised food over organic.
