"India is blessed with varied geographical terrain conducive for adventure activities such as caving, kayaking, mountaineering, paragliding, rafting, rock climbing, skiing, trekking, and more. Many books and reports, written by Indian authors and others, document adventure activities. In recent times, the field of outdoor education has developed significantly nationwide. However, little or none has been written about the history and growth of outdoor education in India. The void in historical documentation of outdoor education in India inspired this research. This descriptive research includes interviews with 25 practitioners in Indian outdoor education and related fields. Significant findings are that India's ancient education system was experiential, the legacy of pilgrimages in the Himalaya and other areas in India likely has affected the development of outdoor pursuits in India, European exploration in the Himalaya influenced the formation of outdoor organizations, colonization brought a Western construct of outdoor education to India, and globalization has impacted the current growth of outdoor education. Interview analysis revealed interrelationships among events and organizations and interconnectedness of various fields related to outdoor education such as adventure education, environmental education, and experiential education.
