Menolly has only one dream. She wishes to become a Harper so that she can sing, play, and weave the music that comes to her so easily. In the world of Pern, women are seen as unworthy of such a respected position. So despite her great talents, Menolly's father forbids her to pursue her dreams. Unable to live without music, Menolly runs away, taking shelter in a cave by the sea. Miraculously, she happens upon a hatch of fire lizards, a species of miniature dragons that most consider to be only a myth. She forms a special bond with nine of these beautiful creatures, and makes herself a home among the rocky ocean cliffs where she plays her music for her new family and teaches them to sing with her. But a centuries-old force known as Thread threatens her world. Only the magnificent dragons are able to protect Pern's inhabitants from the mysterious danger, but fewer and fewer are hatching, and the threat of the Thread looms large. Safe in their cave by the ocean, the fire lizards grow and being to act more and more like the dragons they so closely resemble. Could these tiny creatures by the key to saving Menolly's world?
