"Eleven-year-old Joey and her fifteen-year-old brother, Mathias, live alone in rural New Hampshire. They were abandoned by their mother - a woman who grew increasingly dysfunctional in the aftermaths of six ruined marriages until the year she met a well to-do librarian with a sinister obsession, and deemed him her last chance. The librarian came with an ultimatum: she had to walk away from her older children. When Mathias robs a bank with a squirt gun and goes to jail, Joey finds herself in an empty house with only her beloved dog for company until the day she's reunited with her mother and brought to the colonial home of her alcoholic stepfather. Joey quickly becomes the object of her stepfather's attention and over the summer of 1991 their relationship evolves to include elements of psychological manipulation, sexual deviance, and suicidal behavior."--leaf 3.
