Description
"While it is important to evaluate student-centered learning and outcomes, study abroad involves many more humans than just students. Many of the life-changing, perspective-broadening experiences marketed and delivered to study abroad participants depend on the participation of host families, community members, and local schools and educators. Living with someone from a different culture; exposure to other ways of knowing, being, experiencing, and processing; operating outside of comfort zones; expressing information in another language and culture; and discussions about culture, history, traditions and values from multiple perspectives are just a few activities in which host community members partake during their participation in a short-term study abroad program. By focusing on an exclusively student-centered process of program evaluation, educators, and universities are missing a large portion of their impact, failing to consider community outcomes in designing their programs and objectives, and perpetuating a colonialist approach to study abroad, rather than an approach based in mutuality and reciprocity. Through this study, I address the recognized need to expand the evaluation of short-term study abroad programs beyond the student. I holistically evaluate a case study, study abroad program, the Prescott College Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies' Spanish Intensive courses, including the perspectives of all involved with the courses."--adapted from leaf 2.
