Ewesful skills: experiential learning modules in livestock management for beginning farmers and sustainable agriculture students

This capstone project aimed to empower Sustainable Agriculture and beginning farmers as experiential learners while teaching them necessary technical skills for livestock management success. I prepared ten experiential sheep learning modules and taught these during the lab sessions of Animal Science and Livestock Management courses at Kennebec valley Community College (KVCC). These courses are part of the established Sustainable Agricultural associates degree program at the college. Each learning module includes a PowerPoint lecture, a hands-on lesson plan conducted using the KVCC Farm Sheep, and a corresponding homework assignment. I assessed student learning through their performance on assignments and an end-of-semester survey which tracked proficiency of sheep management skills. Students also provided valuable feedback to strengthen the learning modules and my teaching skills when working with beginning farmers.
