Description
The globalized industrialization of the food system has threatened food security and jeopardized farm security at multiple scales. The current corporate food regime has perpetuated injustice specifically among people of color and women food system stakeholders. Community food security and values based value chains are two proven alternative proposes an integrated approach based on addressing the root causes of food and farm insecurity. This project proposes an integrated approach based on four pillars of sustainability (social, environmental, political, and economic) to develop and implement community food and farm security value chains. A literature review of community food security and values based value chains, development of an integrated approach, and a case study offer insight into the viability of community food and farm security value chains. This research explores what criteria for sustainability and guiding principles shape the integrated approach. Additionally, this project determines whether this integrated approach can be applied at an organizational level and what barriers and opportunities emerge from that approach. Community food and farm security can be achieved with an integrated approach that is driven by sustainability and benefits all food system stakeholders. Availability, access, and utilization of food system resources can be improved with the development and implementation of a community food and farm security value chain at an organization level.
