Description
Environmental and conservation education programs remain a key component for integrating science and values as our society acts upon conservation practices and ecosystem management goals. Environmental education research consistently supports that students are more apt to pro-environmental behaviors when students participate in positive outdoor experiences, their work in the natural environment is integral to their study, and when they can identify issues, research those issues, and come to their own conclusions and appropriate actions based on informed decisions. While activities manuals and curriculum exist for K-12 education, fewer programs focus on supporting undergraduate programs, and activities which target the undergraduate online learned community while incorporating field work are even rarer. This thesis project attempts to provide one way in which undergraduate instructors can integrate field work and online course work using methods and techniques which environmental education research suggest will positively support student growth locally-based, outdoor activities which support the content of a 100- or 200- level course in biodiversity or ecology.
