Description
This applied project created an upper-level (11th and 12th grade) environmental science curriculum specific to Marist School students. The course is designed to aide them in becoming effective citizens in the world community who can contribute to solutions of environmental issues (Hungerford, Volk, & Ramsey, 1994). Through research and evaluation, I have created a bioregional environmental education curriculum that will enable students to effect positive environmental change in the Marist community. By directly involving students in local issues, they learn how they can become a part of the process in finding solutions to current environmental problems and preventing future ones. In order to evaluate the effectiveness of the curriculum, students completed pre-course and post-course surveys that addressed their content knowledge of local environmental issues and their ability to effect change on those issues. The established curriculum at Marist School provides students the means to learn about natural systems, ecological relationships and to become aware of the general environmental problems that the world currently faces. This course, however, takes students beyond general knowledge and allows them to become intimately involved with the local environment while developing their action skills so that they can realize their ability to directly impact environmental issues.
