Dissertation
Thesis (M.A.) -- Prescott College, 2012
Description
This thesis project is simultaneously an examination of the United States agricultural systems through an educational lens and a solution for restoring the fundamental connections between agriculture and learning. The foundation is an historical analysis and review, and assessment of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) and other Community Supported Organizations (CSO). The outcome is Community Supported Agriculture and Nature Education (CSANE), a business plan model focusing on unity, and on balance of people and culture, profit, and the Planet. The goal of CSANE is to promote community, sustainability, and education. One of the key elements of this business plan is a focus is on the use of Work-Trade for all programmatic facets of the organization. The creation of CSANE is a combination of applied experiences, literature review, current successful start-up programs, and surveys. The overall framework is hands-on, experience-based learning that integrates ecology, naturalist study, art, sustainable agriculture, community building and serving learning. This model focuses on working within the current food and educational systems and creates a new nature-based self-regulating system. Included in the description of this project are detailed outlines of current and future program offerings and an introduction to future application for numerous organizational endeavors in the food and educational systems.
